Elisa Baccolo
Gesamtkunstwerk!
After my Bachelor degree in Philosophy, I specialized in Cognitive Neuroscience in Rovereto (Trento, Italy) and London. During this time I learnt how to use a camera, engaging in portraits and street photography as a non-professional and autodidact photographer.
While pursuing a PhD in Cognitive Neuroscience, I attended the course on Documentary filmmaking at the Film
School Luchino Visconti in Milan, and realized my first documentary about the taboo
of death in contemporary society, which was screened in various international
festivals around Italy (Rome Independent Film Festival; Bellaria Film Festival; Sguardi
Altrove Film Festival; Lucania Film Festival).
In November 2021 I was selected to take part in a Film Residency supervised by Werner Herzog, where I autonomously wrote, shot end edited a short film in 12 days entitled Pronto sabré si su nombre es violencia.
My diverse educational background could be summed up in the German word Gesamtkunstwerk, coined by K. F. E. Trahndorff to designate a synthesis of the arts. Indeed, I have always felt the urge to explore different languages, from Philosophy to Neuroscience, from Cultural Anthropology to Photography, Poetry and Film. This urge made me embark on some experiences abroad, which profoundly shaped my worldview: the summers dedicated to volunteering in Belarus (from 2009 to 2013), and two experiences dedicated to research activities in London (September 2015 – April 2016) and Heidelberg, Germany (March 2019-June 2019).
The leitmotif that synthesizes all these experiences can be found in a visceral propensity to confront the complexity of reality to which we are inured.
